The Northern San Luis Valley of Colorado has primary highway access from the North via State Highway 285 over Poncha Pass (9,010 ft / 2,745 m) just South of Poncha Springs, Colorado. The pass generally remains open all year round and does not normally cause problems for vehicles in winter.

Highway 285 meets up with Highway 50 at Poncha Springs, which runs east to Canyon City and then Highway 25.

Continuing North on Highway 285 you can have a scenic drive to Denver through Fairplay, Colorado.

By turning off of Highway 285 Easterly onto Highway 24, North of Poncha Springs, you can access Colorado Springs via Woodland Park.

Expect a lot of beautiful scenery but winding mountain roads when entering or exiting the San Luis Valley from the North to your destination.

The Eastern route, Highway 160, out of the SLV over La Veta Pass to Highway 25 is generally a much faster route to and from Denver or Colorado Springs.
