The Southern San Luis Valley of Colorado has primary highway access from the East along Highway 160 over La Veta Pass (9,426 ft / 2873 m) West of Walsenburg, Colorado which is along Interstate Highway 25 or from the South via Highway 285 where the San Luis Valley opens up to New Mexico. Going South out of the San Luis Valley you meet up with Taos, New Mexico (about 40 miles South of the Colorado – New Mexico State Line), and then Santa Fe, New Mexico. A lesser traveled road in and out of the San Luis Valley from the South is Highway 159 that runs through San Luis, Colorado (Colorado’s oldest town) and at Fort Garland meets up with Highway 160. It is a scenic yet smooth road but you will need to watch out for the wild horses. Highway 160 continues Westerly out of the San Luis Valley through Del Norte, Colorado to and from some beautiful mountainous regions of the state, including Pagosa Springs with a most excellent hot springs and resort.
